Benchmark Advance
Our school is using Benchmark Advance, a brand-new, comprehensive Language Arts program. This program is built to address key shifts in curriculum and instruction to meet the demands of the new standards. Students will be reading various literature and informational texts each week.
Reader's Workshop
Reader's Workshop is a powerful way to structure a reading class. Each day students will be taught a different reading strategy. Afterwards, students choose their own books to read independently. By allowing students to choose their own books, it helps foster a love of reading that will last a lifetime. During independent reading time students are pulled for small group reading instruction to be given more specialized reading support!
Writer's Workshop
Writer's Workshop is a designated period of time each day where students become authors! In our 2nd grade classroom, writing instruction is based primarily on the lessons outlined in the book, Units of Study for Writers written by Lucy Calkins and the Teacher's College at Columbia University. This year in writer's workshop students will explore many different writing genres. These genres include:
Fiction: Personal Narratives, Realistic Fiction, Fantasy, and Comics
Non-Fiction: Informational Book, Research Essay
Opinion: Persuasive Letters
